Kamala Harris, the Vice President of the United States, commenced a prominent week-long trip to Africa by starting off in Ghana. This visit is a part of the Biden administration’s initiative to renew its involvement with the continent. Supported by a $139 million aid package, Harris is also visiting Tanzania and Zambia during this trip. The primary objective of this visit, as stated in a White House briefing on Monday, is to reinforce the partnership between the United States and Ghana and to foster regional security.
During her trip to Africa, Vice President Kamala Harris urged Tanzania’s progress towards a more inclusive government, highlighting recent decisions to lift a ban on opposition rallies and encourage press freedom as significant steps towards democratic reform. Harris commended Tanzania’s first female president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, for her efforts in undoing some of the country’s oppressive policies despite being a member of the ruling party.
